DOCUMENTS FROM PHASE I

About the Communist Museum of Palestine // June 2018

The Communist Museum of Palestine is an proposal for a museum initiated by Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri. It begins by displacing a key premise of a museum, that is to secure and protect something of value, both historical and cultural, for current and future generations to see and appreciate. In locating a museum in Palestine, under conditions of military occupation and the arbitrary rule it confers, no such guarantee of safe keeping and security can exist. Rather than try to ignore (and risk normalizing a state of exception) or overcome the conditions of precarity (by attempting to fortify or immunize oneself to the constant threat of destruction) which anyone living in Palestine is subjected to; this museum proposes to expose its collections inside Palestinian homes. The museum is called communist because it operates on a basic tenet of communism, from each according to their abilities to each according to their needs..
